The mindset of the above-average golfer

A lot of casual sports fans don’t see the intensity in golf, and that’s quite understandable. Golf is a game played at a very relaxing pace. But there is a lot more to the game than meets the eye. A lot of preparation that goes into the game of the above-average golfer. The best golfers in the world are no less prepared than all other athletes.

On that note, we’d like to focus more on the mental aspect of the game.

Golfers like Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth practice what’s called a “10-Yard Rule”. This rule helps lower stress levels, especially after playing a bad game at a hole. They vent their frustrations out inside their heads for 10 yards from the hole. After that, they revert their focus back on what’s ahead.

Pro golfers also have a live-in-the-moment attitude in which they have an intense focus on themselves and the ball. For them, the whole universe at that moment revolves only around the shot they’re about to take.

But perhaps, the most telling sign that golf is about mental toughness is its length. There are 18 holes played in thousands of yards, where many things can go wrong. If you’re the type of person who shuts down after a few mistakes or frustrating instances, then you’re not tough enough for golf.

Stay safe in golf and avoid these injuries

The common misconception about golf is that being a low-impact sport (compared to say boxing and football), the risk of injury is pretty low. The truth is that the foundation of golf relies heavily on strict rules such as proper posture. As such, you can easily injure yourself if you play the game the wrong way.

The most common injury rookie golfers experience is back pain. As mentioned earlier, this is due to bad posture. All those hours hunching over the ball trying to hit it with a club puts a lot of stress on the lower back. Practicing on form and strengthening the lower back with core exercises is a good way to overcome this hurdle.

Any problems with rotator cuffs in the shoulders are quite annoying. Due to the nature of golf, rotator cuff injuries are also pretty common. Since golfers swing anywhere between 50 to 200 times a day, the ligaments and joints in these cuffs can experience some wear and tear. Stretching and upper body workouts can do you good to prevent rotator cuff pain.

Another common injury is tendinitis in the wrist and elbows. Like rotator cuff injuries, this is caused by wear and tear, and swinging with the wrong form. Practicing on form is the sure-fire way to avoid this.

Golfing Equipment For Beginners: a Quick Buying Guide

Golf can be an intimidating sport to approach as it mostly attracts the well-to-do and can be particularly expensive to maintain. But with the right resources and the resolve to amass basic golfing requirements over time, one can be more than ready to get into this hobby. Here are some pieces of golfing equipment to start with.

Golf clubs: A set of these is made up of different clubs that are designed to match different situations, from teeing off at the start with a driver or attempting to dig the ball right out of the bunker. Typically there are woods, irons including wedges, and a putter. Every club is numbered – the lower the number, the farther it’s meant to send the ball out. Every club is also angled to a differing degree.

Balls: Beginners don’t need to invest on superb and expensive golf balls right off the bat. They’re likely to lose them a lot anyway, and there are no fancy spin or compression stats needed when starting out. That said, the focus should be on finding balls that are playable and affordable and will suit the natural development of one’s game.

Golf clothing and gear: Generally, one needs a glove, worn on the left if one’s right-handed, as well as waterproof shoes with spikes for a firm foundation as one’s makes a swing. Waterproof clothing can protect one on the field, as well as an umbrella and a towel for wiping the clubs down. It’s best to check out the dress code in a specific golf club. As for the golf bag, just make sure it’s comfortable with well-padded straps and can help one while being lugged around a course.
